Heartworm Prevention

Here at Westside we recommend keeping your pet on heartworm preventative year round. Not only does it protect against heartworm, but also keeps your pet safe against roundworms, tapeworms, whipworms and hookworms. The chewable medication, called Interceptor, is given once monthly and even better is flavored like a treat! Dogs contract heartworm by being bitten by a mosquito that is a heartworm carrier. Not all mosquitos carry heartworm, however, there is no way to tell which ones are carriers.  Because of this the best way to keep your pet safe is to keep them on prevention year round.

Interceptor does not protect your pet all month, but rather de-worms your pet once a month when given for any heartworm or intestinal parasites.  Interceptor stops the worms from working their way to your pet's heart and setting up home there.  When Interceptor is given monthly it will kill off these worms, however, if the worms get to mature, preventatives will no longer work against them.  This is why giving prevention every month is so important for your pet.
